Migrant vote for president and senate will be for opposition parties according to expert
Many Mexicans will exercise their vote abroad. Mexico City with 15.79% -28.616 voter -, Jalisco with 9.08% -16.453 voter- and Michoacán with 7.86% -14.242- will be the three states with the highest rates of migrant voter. It should be noted that this is an historic sum of migrants voting compared to last presidential elections when only 300 emigrants from state of Mexico concluded the whole process.
Besides The lack of surveys about preferences turn it into anti systemic- vote as Juan González Becerril (a clerk from advanced studies of population and expert In migration matters at UAEMEX) assured: ‘generally speaking the migrants vote is anti-systemic; initially because the departure has to do with disagreement with the political system´ according to opinion research and monitoring he has been carrying out for over two decades now.
He recalled the way migrants voted for opposition parties (PAN) in 2000 and 2006; later on, in 2012 most of the votes were for Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador (PRD) and even in 2017 at the elections for the state of Mexico’s governorship the 300 votes from abroad were to support opposition parties. Thus, migrant’s ballots in July 1st will surely be for the opposition.
‘If we all had the critic vision of a migrant, we would surely vote in opposition. Migrants had had a wider vision of the context of this country and had a well-sustained unconformity against the current political system. There had been some documentation about how low wage rates are the main reason for people to leave the country. Hence they reflect this discontent whit an anti-systemic vote.
He also pointed out that according to several studies, in the State of Mexico there are around 160.000 people living in the United States of America- 10% nationally- who have the possibility to vote.
For his part, Joaquín Sánchez Rubio – INE’S counselor president in the State of Mexico- explained that the sent migrant’s votes will be opened at special voting booths located in Tlalpan´s TEC de Monterrey and the counting of votes will be done by 1800 hours that same day.
