50% of treatment plants without operating in Edomex

The secretary of public works, Rafael Díaz Lea, recognized that at least half of the infrastructure installed in the State of Mexico to treat wastewater is not operating.

It should be pointed out that according to the dependency data, the entity generates about 39.08 cubic meters per second of wastewater, and from this flow, 23.45 cubic meters per second are collected through the municipal sewerage system.

Regarding the treatment plants out of service, the head of The Secretary of Public Works of the Edomex, , said that there are currently 230 treatment plants throughout the Mexican territory, of which the Water Commission of the State of Mexico (CAEM), assigned to the SOP of Edomex, operates only 32, but there are only 16 in real operation . In this sense, the civil servant admitted that it is necessary not only to start up the treatment plants that are out of service but also to modernize them, in order to prevent new strikes that represent higher expenses.

"It's not about starting the plants just to get them going, but to ensure they can work for the rest of the year and for many more years, and also define where we're going to allocate the water, ideally go to irrigation districts, "he said.

According to data from the SOP, the installed capacity for wastewater treatment and operated directly by the CAEM, is four thousand litres per second, so one of the goals that are being analyzed this year, is to increase by two thousand litres per second plus this record, which would allow reaching six thousand litres per second.

Leal Barrueta also explained that the Atotonilco plant operated by the federal government, which is located between the limits of Hidalgo and Edomex, has the capacity to treat 40,000 litres per second of wastewater from the Valley of Mexico and Mexico City. This tempers the fact that in Edomex, there are plants that do not operate at this time.

On this matter, the civil servant insisted that this year an effort will be made to reactivate the largest number of treatment plants out of service.
