The Missing Children of Edomex

134 children are missing, some for more than 6 years

The Missing Children of Edomex

In only one day, ”Children’s Day” will be celebrated in the country, however, there are 134 missing children, according to the Amber Alert website in the State of Mexico.

From 177 profiles that appear in the "active portal alerts" section, only 43 cases are registered as "localized". That is only 24.29% of the cases of disappearance in the State of Mexico achieve recovery of the child.

To issue an Amber Alert , it is necessary a prior evaluation of the prosecutors, that the missing person is under 18 years of age, that he or she is at imminent risk of serious damage to their integrity or life, and that there is enough information such as, name, age, sex, physical appearance ,particular characteristics, sufferings, disabilities, clothing that was worn at the time of the absence, as well as the description of the circumstances of the events, the persons and vehicles involved, the last time The person was seen and some other information considered as relevant.

The Amber Alert is paired with the ALBA Protocol, created specifically for the living search of women, girls, boys and adolescents reported as disappeared, which is composed of three phases. In the first, during the first 24 hours of the disappearance, it is activated immediately when the missing person's information is received and the disappearance report is prepared through 911, Odyssey Modules, Specialized Prosecutor's Office and Police of Social Proximity.

In the second phase, which goes from 24 to 72 hours, coordination and search actions are carried out and the third phase is dedicated to searching, from 72 hours onwards. Until last year, to activate the Amber alert, it was necessary that the missing minor had more than 72 hours without locating. That had to change because of the loose margin it provided for criminals to act and flee.

Despite the protocol, in some cases, the alerts have been active since 2013, as is the case of a teenager who disappeared in Jardines de Morelos, Ecatepec in August of that year and whose whereabouts are unknown to date. On the other hand, the most recent active Amber alert was issued on March 5 of this year. In fact, the minors that appear as located on the website are the most recent cases, so it is deduced that those cases that exceed a certain period of time are gradually forgotten.

However, in the data of the Ministry of the Interior, only 28 disappeared persons appear in the total number of persons related to previous inquiries and investigation files of the federal jurisdiction initiated in the period between January 2014 and April 2018, which it means inconsistency in the data.

This is how many families will commemorate a memory that will inevitably lead to the anguish of uncertainty, on a day dedicated to celebrating childhood innocence, a day that celebrates the rights of children, in a world where adults have failed to protect them from ourselves
