Ecatepec children turn polystyrene foam and coconut shell into wood

Karla and Emiliano are siblings, they are 9 and 11 years old, respectively, and they are from Ecatepec.
Concerned about the excessive felling of trees, and advised by their father, they created a wood substitute using coconut shells and polystyrene foam, which proved to be resistant, versatile and economical.
They named this material Refina, which means Recycled Natural Fiber. Although it originally emerged as a personal project, the children had the opportunity to register their creation in the Multimedia Science and Technology Project of the Latin American Society of Science and Technology (Solacyt). They won the first place and now they have the opportunity to present it at the Chilean Science Festival, which will take place on November 28.
