The political-electoral reform of 2014 allowed a greater number of women to assume the position as Municipal, Trustees and Registered Presidents, but their participation in management positions in the Town Halls must be extended and political violence against this sector eliminated, were some conclusions of the Forum “Munícipes Women: The Challenges of Gender Parity at the Local Level”.

The Forum organized by the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM), and promoted by the Observatory of Political Participation of Women of the State of Mexico, included the panel “The political participation of women at the local level”, in addition to the Conversation “ Challenges and proposals to move towards joint municipal governments ”, and is part of the commemoration of the 66th Anniversary of the recognition of the vote of women in Mexico.

At the inauguration of the event, the Electoral Councilor, María Guadalupe González Jordan, said that the objective is to analyze the progress and political participation of women in the municipal sphere. As well as the challenges to achieving joint municipal governments.

The Chief Justice of the Electoral Court of the State of Mexico (TEEM), Raúl Flores Bernal, said that women should be assured that there are institutions that assume the commitment to protect their rights of access to positions of popular election and guarantee free performance of the order.

In turn, the Executive Member of the State Council for Women and Social Welfare (CEMyBS), Melissa Estefanía Vargas Camacho, said that the right of women to vote and be voted broke the structural type paradigm, because historically public space had It has been assigned to men and there is a challenge to eliminate political violence based on gender.

Meanwhile, the panel "The political participation of women at the local level" was moderated by the Judge of the TEEM, Leticia Victoria Tavira, where the rapporteur, María Guadalupe González Jordan, Electoral Councilor of the IEEM, said that before the behaviors that prevent women fully exercise public office or limit their political-electoral rights, the authorities have issued the Protocol to address political violence against women.

On the other hand, the professor of the Faculty of Higher Studies Aragon of the UNAM, Georgina Cárdenas Acosta, mentioned the names of the first Municipal Presidents that were held in Mexico and that the 2014 political-electoral reform promoted the increase of women in the public sphere, because in 2002 there were 82 leading municipalities and in 2018 561 were counted, in addition to talking about the obstacles they have had to exercise the position.

The Professor-researcher of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE), Francisco Javier Aparicio Castillo, stressed that derived from the 2018 elections, 440 Municipal Presidents were elected in the country, of which 70% govern Small Municipalities (of less than 25,000 inhabitants). Also lamented the political violence suffered by women as candidates, candidates and once they assumed public office, which must be fought.

Meanwhile, the Conversation with Municipal Presidents: “Challenges and proposals to move towards joint municipal governments”, was moderated by Xóchitl Patricia Hernández Bermeo, Head of the Gender Equality and Eradication of Violence Unit of CEMyBS, in which they participated the Mayors of Jilotzingo, Evelin Mayén González; of Chapultepec, Laura Amalia González Martínez; Zacazonapan, Laura Castelán Hernández; Nelly Brígida Rivera Sánchez de Temoaya; Rocío Solís Robles, from Ecatzingo and, Emma Colín Guadarrama from Amanalco.

During the closing ceremony, the Electoral Councilor of the IEEM, Francisco Bello Corona, indicated that the participants of the event have left lessons to consolidate gender parity in the entity.

The activity was attended by the Electoral Councilors, Sandra López Bringas and Daniella Durán Ceja, as well as members of City Halls, Legislators, civil servants, and state and municipal public servants, members of political parties, academia and civil society organizations, students and interested citizenship.
