Between 2010 and 2020, the consumption of synthetic drugs in Mexico tripled, being the main cause of death among young people in our country.

The case of fentanyl stands out, a substance that is 100 times more toxic than morphine and 50 times more than heroin, as undersecretary of Public Security, Ricardo Mejía Berdeja accepted in February of this year.

Other specialists from Mexico and the United States on the subject of synthetic drugs, specifically Ricardo Márquez and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) itself in their evaluation report for the United States: 2019 National Drug Threat Assessment, indicate that our country is on the way to become the main processor of this new drug, derived from opium, because, prior to its trafficking to the United States, criminal organizations combine it with other synthetic drugs.

Specifically, in the case of fentanyl, reports indicate that “as it is a new product, they have to start the introduction with other existing ones; then, to send it to the US market, it is mixed with synthetic drugs, and this mix is ​​being done more frequently in Mexico, ”said the specialist.
