The EU organizes dialogue between journalists in Mexico for World Press Day

May 5th, 2020

On May 4, the EU Delegation in Mexico organized the webinar "The European Union commemorates World Press Freedom Day in Mexico: A dialogue with journalists", which included the participation of four distinguished speakers: Patricia Mayorga Ordóñez (Investigative Journalist for the magazine Proceso), Teresa Montaño Delgado (independent journalist in the State of Mexico and founder of the Portal “The Observer, Journalism, and Verifier of Public Speech”), Fernando Hernández Mitzi (Announcer on Amiltzinko Community Radio in Morelos), Eduardo Espinosa (Executive Director of the National Center for Social Communication, CENCOS). The webinar, moderated by Lucía Lagunes Huerta, a sociologist and journalism expert, explored the state of press freedom in Mexico.

Participants discussed important issues such as the threats caused by the forced displacement of journalists, corruption and impunity, the influence of official advertising, as well as the state of independent journalism and the gender perspective in terms of obstacles to press freedom. The key role played by community radios in regions of the country where the traditional media do not reach and which are also threatened by groups with interests in opposition to those of the communities, when for example there are violations of the right to territory, was also addressed.

The Chargé d'Affaires a.i. From the EU in Mexico, Jean-Pierre Bou opened the webinar highlighting the EU's strong commitment to promoting and defending the freedom of the press worldwide and in Mexico. He added that "the EU recognizes those who fight for a free, independent and vigilant press, which in turn constitutes a fundamental base for any democracy."

In addition to political dialogue with the Mexican government, the EU supports Mexican civil society by executing projects, including those that provide for the protection of journalists. The EU also supports the Federal Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, as well as the Breach-Valdez award, which every year recognizes Mexican journalists who fight to guarantee human rights.

He stressed that the safety of journalists is essential in a country where their threats and murders are among the highest in the world. The European Union condemns and expresses its concern in public statements, every time a journalist is assassinated, calling on the Mexican authorities to investigate the unpunished events. ”

The senior official member of the Delegation of the European Union in Mexico also highlighted some of the journalism awards that are promoted every year by member states, such as in France, Switzerland, and Germany, as a way to highlight the work of journalists in the world that "continue to dare to investigate and report on corruption, organized crime, and violations of land rights, to name a few," he said. During the webinar, the participating journalists made an accurate diagnosis of the situation facing journalism in Mexico, harassed by various flanks, all linked to power, they noted.

They also addressed the challenges and issues that must be placed at the center of the debate in Mexico and that are linked to the attacks against women journalists, the Protection Mechanism, and Freedom of Expression. Staff Writing
