Despite the increase in cases of coronavirus, and despite the fact that just yesterday, with 300 deaths, Mexico contributed 10% of deaths worldwide yesterday, the government of President Andrés Manuel López announced that it will begin the return to economic activities.
This return, called "New Normal" will be gradual, and will begin on May 18, in order to "promote an orderly and cautious gradual reopening to make it safe and durable."
The secretary of economy, Graciela Márquez, indicated that this plan will be carried out in three stages. The first indicates that next Monday, May 18, activities will resume in 269 municipalities in 15 states; specifically, municipalities that in all this contingency time have not registered a single positive case of Covid-19. It should be noted that no municipality in the State of Mexico is included in this list (called for some reason "municipalities of hope").
In these municipalities, public spaces would be opened and mobility restrictions for vulnerable people would be lifted.
The second stage, from May 18 to 31, contemplates a gradual reopening in the other municipalities.
The areas of construction, mining, and manufacturing of transport equipment would be resumed, but already implementing entry filters, sanitation, and hygiene of the workplace. Therefore, companies that resume activities will have to have a sanitary protocol.
On June 1, the third stage will begin. This is simply based on monitoring in a traffic light the state that the progress of the pandemic keeps for the resumption of activities. Those municipalities that are in "green" willfully resume their economic, social, and school activities.
In the State of Mexico, the municipalities of Juchitepec, Zumpahuacan, Atlautla, Tepetlixpa, San Mateo Atenco, Sultepec, Amatepec, Tejupilco, Ocuilan, Jilotepec, Metepec. Tepotzotlán, Almoloya de Juárez, Zinacantepec, Santiago Tianguistenco are in red since at least one case was detected. There are 15 municipalities that did not detect cases but are in the vicinity of those that did, so they are yellow, and they will have to wait until June 1 for their situation to be determined.
Virtually none of the most important metropolitan municipalities with high industrial activity are included.
