The conspicuous and loser PRI people
Among the damages that the hurricane AMLO left at its pass, which whipped out the country and the State of Mexico last June 1º, is the fall of noticeable heads of the PRI, whom, for the first time will know the taste of defeat… They are the biggest losers of the year.
Arturo Martínez Alfaro with a short but relevant career in PRI politics General Manager of the Organismo Público Descentralizado, Water System of Huixquilucan (2013-2015), Assistant Secretary of Organización Zona Sur del Comité Directivo Estatal of PRI (2015-2016), Special Deputy of the PRI in the community of Huixquilucan (2017), Regional Coordinator of Desarrollo Social of the State of Mexico, in Naucalpan (2017-2018), had been designated in March to contend for Huixquilucan’s mayoralty, one of 20 municipalities that more votes provide in the entity.
In spite of his promise made to the governor Alfredo del Mazo that his party would win, Enrique Vargas del Villar of PAN crushed him, who got his re-election with 67 thousand 52 votes while Martinez Alfaro got only 29 thousand 49 suffrages, leaving PRI far behind of PAN- PRD- MC.
Martin Sobreyra Peña, one of the leaders of the PRI in Nicolás Romero, was mayor in two occasions of the same municipality in the periods 2007-2009 and 2013-2015 so he was running for his third period, besides, he was deputy of the XLIV district at the local congress and Regional Assistant secretary of the east zone of the Secretaría of Desarrollo Social of the State of Mexico’s Government.
His daughter, María Monserrath Sobreyra Santos is a federal deputy (2015-2018), this constant bustle between different positions never stopped her from obtaining less than the half of the votes that the coalition Morena-PT-PES, standard-bearer by Armando Navarrete, leaving the PRI on third place in this municipality.
Rodrigo Reina Liceaga, member of the PRI since 2003, was a federal deputy in 2009 in the Congreso of the Unión.
He served as vice-coordinator of the parliamentarian group of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional, and Secretary of the Comisión de Salud. Also, he was part of the commissions of Presupuesto and Cuenta Pública, Federal District and the Espacial para dar Seguimientos a las Agresiones a Periodistas y Medios de Comunicación. In 2012 he was designated Coordinator of Health of the conversion team of the then elected president, Enrique Peña Nieto. In December, with Peña as president, Reina Liceaga took possession as the holder of the Unidad Coordinadora de Vinculación y Participación Social of the Secretaría de la Salud.
On August, 2014, he was assigned as vicepresident of the delegations in the Comisión Nacional para la Protección y Defensa de los Usuarios de Servicios Financieros (Condusef), A year later, the then holder of the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público, Luis Videgaray Caso, incorporates him into his team as boss of the Unidad de Apoyo Técnico de la Oficina del Secretario.
In 2017, was general manager of Coordinación Política at the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores. All of it showing someone close to Peña Nieto.
However, that didn’t help him during the voting for Mayor of Naucalpan. He just obtained little more than 56 thousand votes in that municipality, almost the third part of what Patricia Durán Reveles obtained, she was an ex-member of the PAN and Movimiento Ciudadano who contended with the coalition Morena-PT-PES. This way, the PRI gained the third place in this municipality.
Enrique Geyne Gutiérrez, another politician close to Alfredo del Mazo, was ex-manager of the Organismo del Agua y Dirección de Gobierno de Huixquilucan, ex-manager of Administración y Finanzas and coordinator of the Comisión de Seguridad e Higiene del IMIEM (2013) and ex-assistant manager of infrastructure on health. Run for the candidacy of Atizapan de Zaragoza, losing for a wide verge before the ex-member of the PRD and now a member of Morena, Ruth Olvera Nieto with 28 thousand and 645 votes before 76 thousand and 737 of Morena-PT-PES.
Alberto Martín Saavedra Rodríguez, leader of the PRI in the municipality Cuautitlán Izcalli. Has occupied several positions in the public administration, although he was defeated the three times that he has run for the position in 1997 and 2006 in the federal deputation for the District 7 and in 2003, for a seat in the Legislatura Mexiquense way District XLII local.
This will be his forth beating of four as he lost overwhelmingly the presidency of Cuautitlán Izcalli versus Ricardo Núñes Ayala of Morena-PT-PES, leaving PRI on the third place for the municipality.
José Isidro Moreno Árceaga, governing of Ecatepec (2006-2009), Local deputy for the District XIII Ecatepec, twice (2009-2012 and 2015-2018) and Federal Deputy (2012-2015), couldn’t win his municipality (the most violent of the country and house of the ex-governor Eruviel Ávila) versus Luis Fernando Vilchis Contreras of Morena.
In this case, the PRI obtained the second place with 133 thousand votes versus almost 346 thousand of Morena-PT-PES.
Luis Manuel Origuela Márquez, Secretary of the Ayuntamiento de Tlalnepantla in 2015, holder of the Dirección of Desarrollo Social of the same municipality from 2013 to 2015 and alderman from 2009 to 2012, lost with an extremely wide verge versus Raciel Pérez Cruz of Morena with 52 thousand votes against 117 thousand for Morena-PT-PES, obtaining the third place.
Abel Neftalí Domínguez Azuz, close to the Atlacomulco group for Arturo Montiel (was legal responsible of the Centro de Atención Empresarial del Gobierno del Estado de México from 2000 to 2002), was alternate federal deputy for the second district (Zumpango de Ocampo) from 2003 to 2006 and has been national, federal and municipal Political Counsellor of the PRI. In the last elections, the PRI lost with 15 thousand votes versus almost 35 thousand for Morena, represented by Miguel Ángel Gamboa Monroy, leaving Domínguez Azuz on the second place.
Sandra Méndez Hernández, federal deputy at the LXI and LXIII legislature, legal adviser of the government of the municipality of Tultitlán in 1998, legal adviser of the DIF of that municipality in 2000 and the mayor of Tultitlán from 2013 to 2015, she couldn’t repeat her aspirations this year, losing against Elena García Martínez of Morena-PT-PES with a difference of almost 60 thousand votes in Tultitlán, also obtaining the third place.
Rocío Díaz Montoya, close to Eruviel Ávila and general vice-president of Agua y Saneamiento de Tecámac from 2009 to 2012, manager of Desarrollo Social of this municipality in 2012, mayor of Tecámac from 2013 to 2015 and federal deputy at the LXIII legislature, also lose before Morena (without coalition), represented by Mariela Gutiérrez Escalante. Here, despite that the difference was not that big as the other cases (30 thousand votes), the PRI was left with the desire of repeat management in Tecámac
Erika Yolanda Funes, close to Peña Nieto was district coordinator of Evaluación y Seguridad during the campaign in 2005 for governor. Was state and municipal political counsellor for the PRI, coordinator of the UCE’S Político Nacional of the party, delegated of the Consejo Político Nacional of PRI in Aguascalientes, boss of department in the Secretaría de Desarrollo, Evaluación y Control of Puebla, head of project in the Subsecretaría de Gobierno Región XI Texcoco (2004-2005), regional coordinator at the Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (SEDESOL) (2005), local deputy in 2006 and federal deputy at the LXII legislature.
Not even with this wide resume inside the PRI could defeat Sandra Luz Falcón of Morena-PT-PES on her quest for the mayoralty of Texcoco, a bastion of Morena since the creation of the party in 2014 and controlled by Higinio Martínez.
Héctor Pedroza Jiménez, local deputy for the XXVI district in 2015, very active inside the PRI, as he was general secretary of the Juventud Popular in the PRI Nezahualcóyotl, Assistant General Secretary of the Sector Popular del Comité Directivo Estatal, Secretary of finance of Municipal committee of PRI in Nezahualcóyotl. In this occasion, the candidate who defeated him was the member of the PRD Juan Hugo de la Rosa, who achieved his election with the PAN-PRD-MC in a tight fight against the member of Morena, Elizabeth Nava Hernández
Fernando Zamora Morales, municipal (Toluca), state and national political counsellor of the PRI, federal and local deputy for Toluca and mayor of this municipality since 2015, was looking for another election, which was being also looked and achieved by the former mayor and ex-member of the PAN, now from Morena Juan Rodolfo Sánchez.
Zamora only reached the 78 thousand and 944 votes against the candidate of Morena who obtained 157 thousand and 640 votes.
Carolina Monroy del Mazo, family member of Alfredo del Mazo and Peña Nieto, close to Arturo Montiel, was general manager of the Instituto Mexiquense de la Cultura during the government of Arturo Montiel, during Peña’s term in the State of Mexico, was General manager of the Instituto de Seguridad Social del Estado de México y Municipios for being, in 2006 the holder of Sistema de Radio y Televisión Mexiquense and in 2009, Peña appointed her as Manager of Desarrollo Económico of state government. In 2011 passed to the Secretaría de Acción y Gestión Social of state committee of PRI. Inside the party, was state political counselor of the PRI in the State of Mexico, national political counselor and President of the Comisión de Enlace with the federal government of the Federación Nacional de Municipios de México (FENAMM), general secretary of the CEN of PRI and acting president of the CEN of PRI.
In 2012 was postulated as candidate of the PRI and elected Mayor of Metepec, State of Mexico, staying it the position until 6, January 2015, when she asked for permission for running for being federal deputy, she was elected federal deputy in representation of the 27 District of the State of México for the LXIII legislature in 2015.
She also lost before Morena-PT-PES by 17 thousand votes, leaving the PRI on second place versus Gabriela Gamboa Sánchez.
Among the electoral debts, the same are found former governors such as César Camacho Quiroz, and recycled aspirants such as María Elena Barrera or Martha Hilda Calderón, which sons of politicians, inherited the influential last name.
Among these sons of politicians who knew a crushing defeat, we can find Irazema González Martínez Olivares, who is daughter of the former mayor of Naucalpan, Azucena Olivares, was running for the 30th district of Naucalpan, and for the 36th local district, Olga María Ezquivel Hernández, daughter of Olga Hernández former mayor of Zinacantepec; for the 23rd district, Lilia Urbina Salazar, daughter of Arón Urbina, three times mayor of Tecámac and president of the legislature in the past three-year period; for the 20th district of Zumpango Ariadne Mazutti Choreño, daughter of the leader of the livestock union, Enrique Mazutti; for the XXXVIII district of Coacalco, Berenice Guebara Maupome, local deputy and daughter of Héctor Guevara, political operator since the government of Arturo Montiel, related to the group Atlacomulco. In federal councils, they only won three districts.
Separate mention deserve Martha Hilda González Calderón, who was looking for a local deputation and whose career of more than 30 years in the PRI wasn’t enough for winning; María Elena Barrera Tapia, contending to for local deputation and José Ozuna, son of the General Secretary, close to Del Mazo, Alejandro Ozuna Rivero, who was running for the federal deputation. On these cases, the ruling was resounding, as they were renowned figures of state PRI.
Miguel Ángel Terrón Mendoza, who was running for a federal deputation in Metepec, Héctor Eduardo Velasco Monroy, lose the XII federal district, Atlacomulco, is considered a member of the Group Atlacomulco.
Also the former teacher leader, Roberto Espiridón Sánchez Pompa, district VII, Tenancingo and the former leader of the state PRI, Raúl Domínguez Rex.
It should be mentioned that the PRI only achieved the deputation in the X district, Valle de Bravo.
Regarding to the federal process, César Camacho Quiroz (Former mayor of Metepec and interim governor of the State of Mexico from 1995 to 1999), one of the eldest members of the PRI and recognised of the entity and Alejandra del Moral, close to Alfredo del Mazo and former mayor of Cuautitlán Izcalli, lose the Senate, which they were looking for.
This way, the PRI knew the most dramatic defeat in its whole history, when losing 62 municipalities of the State of Mexico, which has been until this year its principal political force, and with the party, the most old-world PRI members of the entity.
Last elections of 1, July achieved, at a national scale, a historical result.
In which the PRI, party who had been maintaining its absolute hegemony until 1994, year in which the opposition parties took force, left relegated into third political force even with alliances with its satellite matches (PVEM and NA), that’s, at least for the PRI members who had left in the party, a few after the major exodus of Morena which was founded in October, 2017 and whose vote was transferred to the party, was one of the factors that triggered the historical weakness of the PRI. This national scenario was reproduced at the State Mexico, to one year of the close victory of the PRI member Alfredo del Mazo with the coalition PRI-PVEM-PES (This last party, supporting Morena this year’s elections), whose government has not only no accomplished his commitments in a general view, but who has getting worse talking about safety.
The State of Mexico is house of several rancid ancestry members of the PRI, loyal to their party by family tradition, with Del Mazo being the strongest last name. However, its fall was proportional to his relevance in the party.

This national scenario was reproduced at the State Mexico, to one year of the close victory of the PRI member Alfredo del Mazo with the coalition PRI-PVEM-PES (This last party, supporting Morena this year’s elections), whose government has not only no accomplished his commitments in a general view, but who has getting worse talking about safety.
The State of Mexico is house of several rancid ancestry members of the PRI, loyal to their party by family tradition, with Del Mazo being the strongest last name. However, its fall was proportional to his relevance in the party.
