All the cities of State of Mexico are insecure: INEGI

July 31th, 2019

Ecatepec is the city with the highest insecurity perception in the country, according to the National Urban Security Survey (ENSU) of the second quarter of the year, conducted by INEGI.

The survey, which covered 70 urban concentrations in the country, showed that 97.4% of the inhabitants of Ecatepec, governed by the morenista Fernando Vilchis, feel insecure in their municipality, making it the most insecure city in the country. In a very close third place nationwide, is Naucalpan, governed by former panista and morenista Patricia Durán Reveles, with a 94% insecurity perception.

None of the other cities are better on security issues. Tlalnepantla, governed by the morenista Raciel Pérez Cruz, has an insecurity perception of 87.5%; It is followed by Toluca, where 86.3% of the population feels insecure under the government of panista and morenista Juan Rodolfo Sánchez. Atizapán de Zaragoza, governed by the morenista Ruth Olvera, has a 78.8% insecurity perception; It is closely followed by Chimalhuacán, governed by the PRI Jesús Tolentino, with 78.2%.

Nezahualcóyotl, governed by the PRD Juan Hugo de la Rosa, has an insecurity perception of 76.6%, while the last city surveyed, Cuautitlán Izcalli, governed by the morenista Ricardo Núñez, has an insecurity perception of 72.1%. That is, its inhabitants perceive none of the cities of the State of Mexico as safe.

In June 2019, the places with the highest perception of insecurity were ATMs located on public roads (82.1%), followed by public transport (74.5%) and banks (69%). In addition, 33.4% of the population of the age of 18 and older considered that crime would remain equally bad in the next year, while 26.9% considered that it would get worse. However, this percentage is lower than the same quarter, but in 2019, where 35.1% of the population considered that crime would remain equally bad and 33.2% said it would get worse.

Obviously, the situation makes citizens prioritize insecurity as the problem of their city. 89.5% of Ecatepec inhabitants identified crime (theft, extortion, kidnapping, fraud, etc.) as a problem in their city, which is the highest percentage in the country, only behind Tapachula, Chiapas (98.4%). Naucalpan (84.9%), Toluca (78.7%), Tlalnepantla (78%), Chimalhuacán (68.7%), Cuautitlán Izcalli (66%), Atizapán (64.9%) and Nezahualcóyotl (62.9%) follow Ecatepec.

Naucalpan is the city of the State of Mexico that had the most perception of corruption, since 71.4% of its inhabitants experienced acts of corruption by their municipal police. It is followed by Tlalnepantla (70.8%), Atizapán (69.1%), Ecatepec (64%), Cuautitlán Izcalli (63.5%), Nezahualcóyotl (47.5%), Toluca (45.2%) and Chimalhuacán, which is an atypical case, since only one 27.5% of its inhabitants were victims of acts of corruption.

In Ecatepec, only 9.5% of the population considered the government of their city as effective in solving the problems faced by their urban nucleus, being the second city with the lowest confidence in their municipal president in the country, just behind Tonalá, Jalisco (9.2%). At the entity level, Naucalpan is close with 9.8% confidence; Atizapán with 18.2%, Cuautitlán Izcalli (20.3%), Tlalnepantla (22.6%), Chimalhuacán (27.7%), Toluca (28.6%) and Nezahualcóyotl (31%).

Virtually the entire State of Mexico is covered with "potholes." 95.2% of the inhabitants of Ecatepec considered this as a problem for their city, followed by Atizapán (90.3%), Cuautitlán Izcalli (89.1), Toluca (87.1%), Nezahualcóyotl (79.9%), Tlalnepantla (77.8%) and Chimalhuacán (58.8%).
