Migrants: The blood that feeds crime

Central Americans flee their countries to escape an almost certain death at the hands of armed groups, including military and drug traffickers as well as hunger. However they have become in the blood that feeds crime, who traffic with their bodies and their lives.

In the Migration and Human Rights Study published by the Centro de Estudios Sociales y de Opinión Pública (CESOP) of the Chamber of deputies, it refers that at the end of this year, the number of migrants crossing the Mexican territory will be 900 thousand people, which represents a business that generates billions of dollars for organized crime.

According to the work done by Guadalupe Morales Núñez “each migrants represents between two and six thousand dollars for criminals, a figure that is multiplied by each person who intends to enter, which is an aditional problem that exceeds migrant income and admission controls”.

There is no way to stop the migrantory flow, because in the thousand 20 kilometers in lenght that the southern border has, there are 370 illegal entry points and only 12 legal ones, which is insufficient to avoid a massive income by people who literally escape from their regions, only in March of this year, a group of migrants from Honduras with more of 20 thousand people entered Mexican territory by force; Obviously, the migration infrastructure was insufficient to carry out the ordered records. Public opinion in the region said that the increase in migrants is due to the support given to Central Americans through humanitarian visas. But this increase has brought vandalism and prostitution by women who have no way of sustaining themselves. The citizens of the region express their discomfort at the massive arrival; in the first caravan they gave their help and showed solidarity, but they are no longer willing to provide more support.

On the other hand, on August 9, in the city of Geneva, Switzerland, the national ombudsman, Luis Raúl González Pérez, warned that Mexico´s international protection system could be collapsed in the face of the large number of refuge requests, if not with adequate infrastructure and trained personnel in the face of the high number of applications.

This, said, put boys, girls and teenagers in a helplessness situation, since their requests may not be channeled or taken care of despite the fact that according to the Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CUDH), minors cannot be rejected at the border without an adequate and individualized analysis of their requests. González Pérez said that the number of people presented to the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) between 2018 and January-May 2019 period has increased 41 percent.

In addition, on the southern border, immigration review actions have increased, there is overpopulation in many INM enclosures where human rights are violated, as well as the presence of National Guard for the containment of migrants has increased. On the other hand, on the northern border, the shelters are saturated and all the infrastructure is already insufficient due to the number of people in the context of human mobility.
