The secretary of the municipality of Toluca, Francisco Vázquez, justified the increase of up to 400 percent in femicides reported in Toluca by the federal government and of 300% in harassment during 2019, due to an alleged “bad record” of files or complaints, by the national public security system.
According to the municipal official, the exponential increase reported by the National Executive Secretariat (SENSP) between 2018 and 2019, both in femicides and in cases of harassment and other sexual crimes in Toluca, would not correspond to what is really happening in the capital, since many of these crimes, he said, actually occur in neighboring municipalities, but are registered here, he said.
He said that in this circumstance, the municipal government began negotiations with the country's SENSP, to improve the registry of investigation files, since it estimated that at least 25% of these crimes reported, both in femicide and harassment and other sexual crimes, they do not occur in the city of Toluca but in other neighboring towns, such as San Mateo Atenco, he said.
